If Phan Chu Trinh saw reform and independence as a long process of social and cultural transformation, the other leading reform era Wgure, Phan Boi Chau, advocated a much quicker transition to the post colonial future. Phan Boi Chau exempliWed and shaped the broader sensibilities of the reform generation: he was intensely critical of French rule, embraced Western learning as a model for the Vietnamese, and believed in the need for elite lead ership. He organized the Eastern Study movement, and his writings formed the basis of the curriculum at the Dong Kinh Free School.
Commercialization of the economy forced the use of cash rather than barter in the terms of trade. It placed many smallholders into a dependent tenancy and landless peasants into staggering debt.
