All of them show in unique ways how individuals and families in war-torn societies are affected by the fighting going on around them. Unlike most conventional war fiction, these stories do not typecast the enemy as evil or as dispensable. The enemy is war itself. These stories lack the moral bellicosity epitomized in Admiral William F. Halsey's victory message to his fleet when the Japanese surrendered: "The forces of righteousness and decency have triumphed" (Wartime 129). These are not propaganda pieces.

If anyone thinks different, don't argue with him. He's a defeatist, and that kind of fellow shouldn't make war. Don't have pity, hit. No one has any pity on you either.
