Things returned to where they had been pre-Purday when, in 1854, the lords of the law ruled that a foreigner could receive British copyright only if he traveled to the Queen's dominions and remained there long enough to see the actual printed production of his work. Otherwise, sale of copyright to a British subject was outside the law.

Duval, was brought in to head Childs's mechanical operations. He had been trained in leading European lithographic establishments and was the best craftsman in the art that America had yet seen. Duval became partowner of the business in 1834, when Childs was unable to pay him $750 in back salary. Duval at once began to publish several magazines with lithographed illustrations. His work came to the attention of government authorities, which provided him with lucrative contracts to make illustrations for reports by various expeditions sent to explore the unknown territories acquired by conquest, purchase, or manifest destiny.

Inexpensively priced reprints of Harriet Beecher Stowe, W. H. Prescott, Melville, Longfellow, and other Americans began to flood the British cheap-book market. This boom was partly depressed when many Americans, including publishers of popular music, discovered that temporary residence in Canada provided the same effect as a stay in England. By going across the northern border, where British copyright law prevailed until 1875, Americans in search of protection throughout the English-speaking world were able to foil London reprinters and music pirates.
