There are few people who experience reflexology treatment who do not benefit to some degree. Chapter 1 General Introduction to Reflexology When people think of reflexology they usually think of feet, and that it is a type of treatment given to the feet but for treating the body rather than treating problems involving the feet themselves. However, the widely accepted definition of reflexology (as described in the core curriculum for Reflexology published by the Reflexology Forum in the UK in 2006) is that reflexology is a form of complementary therapy involving treatment of reflex points and reflex areas found in the feet and the hands which relate to corresponding parts of the body.
The reflex areas to the parathyroids are found in both hands on the outer margins (zone 2 side) of the thyroid area just below where the thumb joins the palm of the hand with an upper and lower reflex on each hand. Lungs The lungs are situated in the thoracic cavity (chest region) of the body and are responsible for breathing. The air breathed in takes oxygen into the body and the air breathed out contains carbon dioxide (a waste material). The lungs are cone shaped and can be described as having a tree-like structure with the main trunk of the tree, the trachea (windpipe), dividing into two main branches, the bronchi, which then divide into smaller branches called bronchioles, which occupy the lungs.
Heart The heart is situated in the chest region nearly centrally just above the diaphragm but with one-third to the right side and two-thirds to the left side. It is about the size of a clenched fist and can be divided into four chambers with an upper and a lower chamber, an atrium and a ventricle, respectively, on each side of the heart. Blood is pumped round the body by the heart and, once oxygenated, leaves the left side of the heart via the aorta, and the deoxygenated blood returns to the right side of the heart via veins (the inferior and superior vena cavae).
